 flag state regulations

The contents of a medical chest vary depending on the flag state, inteded voyage (coastal or worldwide) and quantity of crew on board. Each flag state has its own regulation regarding the medical chest requirements for vessels flying under that flag. These regulations specify the minimum quantities and types of medical equipment and medications that must be carried on board.

The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC 2006) established by the International Labour Organization (ILO) emphasizes the importance of providing seafarers with health protection and medical care that is at par with the standards available to onshore workers. This includes access to necessary medicines, medical equipment, diagnosis and treatment facilities, and medical expertise. The International Medical Guide for Ships (IMGS) published by the World Health Organization (WHO) supports this principle and by ensuring its availability and adherence to its instructions onboard ships, countries can fulfill their obligations under the Convention and ensure optimal health outcomes for seafarers.

It is important for ship operators to ensure that their vessel's medical chest is properly stocked and maintained according to the requirements of the flag state. This ensures that the vessel is equipped to handle any medical emergencies that may arise while at sea.
